This live date broken into two volumes has never sounded better. Upon its original release, critics and fans alike marveled at the recording quality and the moderate amount of audience noise that can distract from crucial moments of music. Recorded just two years after he moved to New York, leader Burrell decided to eschew a small ensemble and super-size the bandstand. During this period, between contributions for Blue Note and Prestige, he may have been the most recorded name guitarist in jazz and definitely had his pick of east cost players to choose from. His personnel choices for this show were inspired. After asking label-mate Louis Smith to bring his trumpet, he made an interesting choice in going with twin tenors in Tina Brooks and Junior Cook. Duke Jordan and Bobby Timmons split time behind the piano for the two different sets, while Sam Jones and Art Blakey handled bass and drums, respectively, straight through. Mastered and cut from the original full-track mono master tapes using a full-track mono tape head and all-tube tape electronics.

Not Too Late finally showcases the true vocal talents of Norah Jones, who has been on top of the musical world since her Come Away With Me debut in 2003. That initial release and its follow up, Feels Like Home no doubt alerted the world to the phenomenal abilities of this young singer, but those who'd seen her live reported a command of nuance that never quite came across in her recorded work. At 21, Herbie Hancock was already a mature and well-traveled musician. He played Mozart with the Chicago Symphony at age 11, studied at Grinnell College and by age 20 played with Donald Byrd. Takin' Off, his Blue Note debut, is a sophisticated showcase for Hancock's ability as a group leader. Not as intellectually challenging or technically complex as his later recordings, the pianist nevertheless displays a restless imagination and technical verve. When he's not striking off on funky, swinging solos, the backing chords are restrained an unassuming. He's controlling the session and confident enough to let his soloists (Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and Dexter Gordon on tenor sax both in fine, relaxed form) take the spotlight. From the now-legendary hit "Watermelon Man" to the reflective, noir-ish "Alone and I," this is a great first album that foreshadows the greatness that would follow on his Blue Note masterworks, Empyrean Isles and Maiden Voyage.
