This production was recorded in 1959 in Chicago, and maybe that's the very reason that it swings and pulsates with such vigor as though possessed by the devil! And then of course there's Ray Brown, right out of the Oscar Peterson Trio, whose "walking bass" ensures that there's plenty of movement. And while there's obviously no room for percussion in Jimmy Giuffre's concept, the underlying beat will certainly make you want to snap your fingers and tap your foot. A master of harmony par excellence, the guitarist Jim Hall was a man who adopted a soft and gentle timbre. This recording was recorded spontaneously in the studio: six of the nine compositions were contributed by Giuffre, and one by Jim Hall, leaving the light and airy "Mack The Knife" and the toned down "Come Rain Or Come Shine", both of which have taken on evergreen status in the history of jazz.
