The eventful meeting between Johann Sebastian Bach and the King of Prussia provided and continues to provide a popular topic for biographers and musicians alike. Himself an excellent musician, Frederick the Great composed a theme upon which Bach improvised on the spot and which provided the basis for a series of canons and ricercare upon his return to Leipzig.

A summary work from the end of the Baroque era, The Musical Offering not only provides a concise reflection of various composition styles by employing all contrapuntal refinements possible but also demonstrates the far-reaching universality of the Thema Regium which - with the exception of the great six - voice Ricercare - is the focal point of this composition.

One of the most merited Bach performers since the beginning of the stereo era, Karl Munchinger recorded this ambitious work in 1958. It is a recording which can still hold its own against the formidable competition provided by later generations.
