The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra

The present re-release of ballet music by two French composers who are better known to audiences as writers of grand opera offers a delightful opportunity to get to know and enjoy Meyerbeer and Massenet from their instrumental side.

In this arrangement by Constant Lambert, the ballet music Les Patineurs impressively demonstrates the brilliance and melodic richness of Meyerbeer's musical language which is magnificently performed here by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under Jean Martinon. The orchestra quite obviously enjoys itself to the full, playing with verve and nimbleness, and achieving a wonderfully transparent, luminous and light tone in both the tutti passages and the more intimate sections. The ice skaters and their virtuoso figures on the ice are conjured up in amazing detail before eyes and ears of the listener. The ballet music from the second act of Jules Massenet's opera Le Cid accompanies a festive street scene in the work and takes on a splendiferous independence under Martinon's precise conduction here. The character of the dances from various Spanish provinces is brought intensively alive by Martinon and the orchestra by means of perfectly balanced groups of instruments. Thanks to the exhilarating orchestral sound, we are presented with a merry spring celebration which becomes increasingly colorful with each dance.
