Although guitarists played an important role in rhythm groups ranging from swing to hard bop, they are an exception as bandleader. Among the most successful are George Benson, Wes Montgomery and Herb Ellis. This LP was the second recording made under Ellis' direction for the Verve label.

"My mother tells me I always played the blues", said Herb Ellis in thinking back to his childhood. And this is exactly what he did on this LP from 1957: blues in every shape and form, in every mood, in every tempo. There’s not a dull moment with this range of variation; that’s simply impossible when his fellow musicians are called Ray Brown and Stan Levey. He freed himself quite simply from the piano (and maybe also from the omnipresence of Oscar Peterson) the piano stool remained unoccupied. Just listen to this LP as far as "Royal Garden Blues" and with the hot-blooded Roy Eldridge, nicknamed 'Little Jazz', on the trumpet and Stan Getz, the cool and relaxed musician on the tenor saxophone, you will certainly know why blues is the talk of the town.

Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane

$21.95

John Coltrane’s development as an improviser accelerated in the mid-1950s when he was with Miles Davis. During six months of 1957 with Thelonious Monk in a celebrated engagement at New York’s Five Spot Café, it went into overdrive. Coltrane said later, "Working with Monk brought me close to a musical architect of the highest order. I felt I learned from him in every way - through the senses, theoretically, technically." Because of the artists’ conflicting contractual agreements, Jazzland (Riverside’s sister label) was unable to capture the Monk quartet live at the Five Spot. Producer Orrin Keepnews managed to record three studio tracks that did not see the light of day until the sixties. "Ruby, My Dear," "Trinkle, Tinkle" and "Nutty" let us hear what all the excitement was about. "Off Minor" and "Epistrophy" find Monk and Coltrane in a septet that included the great Coleman Hawkins. This CD also includes "Functional," an unforgettable Monk solo blues.
