Even today Wagnerites still rave about the legendary Bayreuth recording of Parsifal whose lengthy score when conducted by Hans Knappertsbusch lasted a whole LP more than his fellow conductors' recordings. But even taken at such a leisurely tempo, no one thought of looking impatiently at the clock. Just sit back and listen to the present recording of Wagner Preludes and you certainly won't find this surprising bar for bar the maestro picks out even the finest particles of the musical structure and gives his Munich ensemble time and space to conjure up a delightful timbre. Just note the warmth and presence of the wind instruments. Whatever sort of sound the engineers had in mind for this recording on the Westminster label, they managed to get fairly close to the acoustical ideal of the Bayreuth Festival opera house. Luckilar lateral effects which abounded in the early days of stereophony. The Wagner coming out of the loudspeakers is dry, analytical and quite, quite natural.
