During the early Sixties, the New York jazz scene became acquainted with a sensitive and somewhat shy guitarist who gradually played his way into the limelight. The name was Gabor Szabo. After a lengthy odyssey, both geographically and musically speaking, Szabo left Budapest shortly after the revolution, tried his hand at Indian classical music and French pop, and went on to study at the Berklee School of Music in Boston where he worked with Chico Hamilton and Charles Lloyd before treading his own music path. The whirlwind tour offered on the Gypsy '66 contains some surprises, and takes one less in the direction of Gabor Szabo's Sinti background than in that of American and English songbooks: John Lennon and Paul McCartney's "Yesterday" and "If I Fell" are performed with great charm and lyrical ease. The two Burt Bacharach numbers "Walk On By" (yes, Dionne Warwick's great hit!) and the less well-known "The Last One To Be Loved" are played with an ethereal touch but without pathos. Gary McFarland proves his talent as an outstanding arranger in the two titles "The Echo Of Love" and "Flea Market."
