We’ve all heard the works in this set dozens of times. We all know Take The A Train, Perdido and the other numbers, either with Duke Ellington and his Orchestra or performed by other soloists and bands. Three very different ensembles are heard upon opening up this particular Duke Ellington Songbook. Each of them offers Ella not only a respectable but also highly individual accompaniment, which complements her voice to perfection. Oscar Peterson’s respect for Ella Fitzgerald shines out from every groove on the disc, and in a similar fashion she too appears to enjoy the cheeky sound of Ben Webster or Stuff Smith in other numbers with sextet accompaniment and allows the two soloists to take her through the improvisations as though she were floating on air. There’s really no point in mentioning individual tracks since each and every one of them is a true masterpiece. But wait! That’s not all! This box contains the very rare treat of Ella and Duke in the studio together!
