This delightful release from 1977 has garnered special attention from audiophiles since its release for the sound engineered into it by Glyn Johns and Jon Astley. Michael Fremer refers affectionately to this title as "The Original Unplugged". Desired mint copies of British first-pressings have become scarce and expensive. Now pressed on 180grams and taken directly from the original analog masters, this pairing of The Who's mastermind Pete Townshend and the late Ronnie Lane (d. 1997) from the Small Faces, shows a new generation why this was one of the few "summit, all-star affairs" from the 1970's that not only met but exceeded expectations. Joining the pair are Eric Clapton on assorted guitars, The Who's John Entwistle on bass, Charlie Watts of the Stones behind the drums and the late Ian Stewart on keyboards. Townshend's manic power-rock side is well represented and tastefully off-set by Lane's tender contrasts. Centered mainly around acoustic guitars, there is some dazzling finger work from Townshend and Clapton throughout. All in all, the set has a laid back and loose feel to it, but also one that leaves the listener wishing for follow-ups and live "unplugged" recordings that were to never be. Highlights include a trip to downtown London in the string-laden "Street In The City", the energetic "My Baby Gives It Away" and "Heat To Hang Onto" and even some country in 'Till The Rivers All Run Dry". Two of Lane's finest efforts round it out in "Annie" and "April Fool", the later with Clapton's blues runs the perfect compliment. Other songs include "Nowhere To Run", "Keep Me Turning", "Catmelody" and the title track. A minor classic from the 1970's. Original MCA and Polydor pressings were mastered by Doug Sax and used as references for the remastering by Bernie Grundman. The MCA disc is dull when compared to the tape while the Polydor pressing is more like the master. Since both were cut by Sax, who says he cut them the same, we are left to conclude that plating and pressing (vinyl formula) account for the majority of the differences. The Classic reissue is more detailed and open than either the original MCA or Polydor pressings - a testiment to the Grundman cutting system, RTI plating and Quiex SV vinyl - you can hear the difference!
