When one hears the name Hermann Scherchen, one immediately thinks of his bold championship of 20th-century music and the successes he celebrated with contemporary works, as well as his supreme artistic achievements in the performance of famous orchestral works. Not nearly so well known are his untiring aspiration and research in the field of electro-acoustics. This alone provides a good reason for being curious about the recordings Scherchen made in later years for the Westminster label. He clearly pulled out all the stops and the results are just amazing! The conductor takes the listener by the hand and leads him deeper and deeper into the dialogue between the Sultan and Sheherazade with all its contrasts. Full of reconciliation and winningly but never sugar-sweet, threateningly yet not brutally - that is how Scherchen allows the two characters to speak. All the while, from the tender violin solo right up to the richly blaring brass, the character of the music remains warm, light as air, carefully and lovingly detailed. The recording engineers must have delved into their bag of tricks to give such wonderful presence to the various instruments and, to be sure, every listener will agree that the result far exceeds all the expectations ever made of a recording from the Fifties.
