Even if one hadn’t taken note of the title of this LP, The Benny Goodman Movie, the three names Krupa, Hampton and Wilson immediately call to mind the King of Swing. Without these three musical giants, the quartet - which Goodman featured in each of the Swing Big Band’s concerts - would certainly not have managed to sweep clear the dance-floor wherever it appeared. When Airmail Special, I Got Rhythm, or especially Sing, Sing, Sing was played, all the fans and their dancing partners flocked to the front of the stage to get as close as possible to their idols. They cheered, whistled and applauded as loudly as they could in order to encourage the musicians to give every musical drop of blood they possessed. It was at moments like this that the somewhat stiff man with the clarinet loosened up - a delight to witness in the Benny Goodman Film from 1955.
Norman Granz, owner of Clef, was clever enough to grab on to the opportunity offered by a reunion of the rhythm group and swiftly pencilled them into his studio bookings diary. Eight long tracks were captured on tape, far more music than could be used for the film soundtrack. And six of these are presented here on this re-release.
In almost all the tracks, Lionel Hampton’s vibraphone captures the melody, while Gene Krupa at the drums is explosive and elastic, and the piano notes flow elegantly like pearl-drops under Teddy Wilson’s fingers. The three (here supported by bass-player Red Callender) have played these swing melodies hundreds of times, and we’ve all heard Moonglow and Just You, Just Me a thousand times over. But that’s beside the point: there’s not a millisecond of mere routine, never a hackneyed phrase - every single minute of this LP is brimming over with fire and dynamite.
