At long last, this stunning recording of Beethoven’s Fifth is available once more. With an undisputed reputation as Deutsche Grammophon’s most important production in the 1970s, this LP rounds off Speakers Corner’s trio of milestone recordings on the Yellow Label. The highly sensitive and genial conductor Carlos Kleiber rarely took or takes up the baton - with the result that the mere announcement of a concert under him is enough to send the price for tickets to astronomical heights on the black market. Kleiber very rarely enters the recording studio, but when he does connoisseurs and the public alike can hardly wait to hear the results. His rare recordings, all of which are found among the so-called "standard repertoire," are long since classified as "premiere recordings" - a fact which needs no further comment. Despite being recorded almost a quarter of a century ago, this performance is more than a match for the countless new recordings of Beethoven’s symphonies. This performance will live on when others - praised as reflecting the spirit of their age - have long sunk into oblivion.
